Many of us wouldn’t think of washing out scrunchies. They are only in our hair for a day or two at a time, so why would we? But your scrunchies could be a lot dirtier than you may think!

Unlike regular elastic hair bands, scrunchies are equipped with added fabric to transform a dull elastics band, into perfect little scrunchies. But these cute patterned fabrics can hold the dirt from the day, such as sweat. Just like clothing, you should wash your scrunchie according to what fabric it is made out of. Fabrics such as cotton, nylon and polyester can be incorporated into your regular wash along with similar items of clothing. More delicate fabrics like silk and linen should be hand-washed. However, to prevent splitting seams and loose seams, it may be best to handwash all your scrunchies to help with longevity.

Here is a simple guide on how to hand wash your scrunchies to keep them as fresh as possible:

  1. Find a large bowl and fill it with lukewarm water. Then add a couple of drops of your favourite fabric softer.
  2. Then you need to scrub the scrunchie together to make sure the water and softener are soaked into the fabric. Make sure to do this gently as not to ruin the fabric or break seams.
  3. In a separate bowl or using the tap, rinse the scrunchie until the water runs clear and there is no more soap left in the scrunchie.
  4. Finally, squeeze any excess water out of the scrunchie and lay it out to dry. This should be in a warm area with direct sunlight, until completely dry.
